THE 3 3 3 3 “RULE”

A charcuterie board can be daunting when you look at all of the options available to you. There are SO MANY possibilities, so where do you start? Designing a charcuterie display can be simple if you break it down… so here is a helpful “rule” when it comes to a beautifully balanced board: 3 meats, 3 cheeses, 3 starches, and 3 accompaniments.

Meats. Choose three options that will appeal to every palate. For instance, a prosciutto, a classic dry salami, and a peppered salami provide a solid variety. The prosciutto is mild, buttery, and soft, while the two salamis give a good chew and appeal to those wanting more bold and sharp flavors.

Cheeses. Go with your gut on this one. There are so many wonderful choices, so pick your favorites but also mix up the textures. If you’re unsure what you love, choose a soft, a hard, and a crumbly. Perhaps a combination of Brie, Sharp Cheddar, and Feta? Ooh, or Chèvre, Gouda, and White Cheddar? Or add some bite with a spicy cheese, such as a Pepperjack or Habanero variety? I could do this all day.

Starches. Mix textures and grains for the perfect bite. I’m a sucker for a good sliced baguette… that chew is to die for. But pretzel crisps, pita bread, mini toasts, and whole grain crackers are great too. And if you’re feeling fancy, you could add in an artisan cracker, such as croccantini.

Accompaniments. Here is where you can really get creative. You can use sweet or savory condiments, spreads, dips, sweets, you name it. Honey. Fruit preserves. Chutneys. Mustards. Hummus. Dark Chocolate. I could go on and on.

Fill in the gaps with fresh fruit and berries, dried berries, crudités, and nuts… Maybe a sprig or two of fresh herbs… And voila!

Everyone loves a good spread. If you have enough variety in flavor and texture, someone is going to find what they love… And compliment you on a fabulous display.

And if all else fails, pick a theme and run with it. Cheers!
